Ramjas Scare: another event called off due to ABVP vandalism

ABVP led arena of turmoil within the college premises needs to be rectified as soon as possible, for the betterment of students and that for the sake of institution’s reputation too.

After Ramjas College witnessed a turmoil within Delhi University, another college of the esteemed institution had called off its annual street play, which was scheduled to be held on February 23rd.

Just two days after RSS backed-Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) managed to disrupt the invitation to JNU scholar Umar Khalid fora seminar which was scheduled at Ramjas, SGTB Khalsa College called off a street play competition following the similar circumstances. The annual play competition, Pratyaksh, was organized by the college theatre group, Ankur. It was part of the college festival,Lashkara, and nine colleges, including SGTB Khalsa, were to perform. A wide variety of plays had already been confirmed: Accidental Death of An Anarchist by Kirori Mal College, Saare Jahaan Se Accha by Hindu College, Sawaal To Uthegaby Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce, Main Kashmir Aur Aap? Main Manipur by Gargi College and Kachru ka Monologue by Vivekananda Institute of Professional Studies were in process of receiving confirmation.

The event was called off following the discussion between Principal of the concerned college-Jaswinder Singh and ABVP led DUSU’s president- Amit Tanwar. Mr. Tanwar said that he asked the college to properly evaluate the scripts of the play before giving the clearance. He further asserted that, if anything objectionable or anti-national found in the content, then it can create an alarming situation, and security to that cannot be guaranteed.

Principal Jaswinder Singh tried to put a brave front, denying the rumors of being under pressure, and cancelling the event. “We have discussed with all the stakeholders and the members of the committee and further decided to postpone the event, as the prevailing situation is not conducive for the event”, Singh said.

The theatre convener and assistant professor at the college, Saikat Ghosh, however, confirmed the continuous threat from the side of DUSU, and considered that as the main reason for the cancellation of the event. “There were repeated threats from DUSU and police also requested us to call off the event in interest of restoring peace and harmony”, he added.

This was not the first major attacks of the RSS led-ABVP. Earlier, they stopped a screening of a documentary “Muzaffarnagar Abhi Baaki Hai at DU’s Kirori Mal College. Recently,a debate on “Idea of University” organized by the AISA was attacked at the Faculty of Arts. Activists from Pinjra Tod, a group working for the women’s right within the campus, have complained constantly regarding harassment while organizing protests.

All those events  which depicts the idea of equality, validates the term equality, advocates the rights of every neutral body and further stands over the emancipation of women and their active participation in institutional activities are objectionable to the ideas of ABVP’S practice of “exclusivist hypernationalism” and hence gets proactive counter in return.

ABVP led arena of turmoil within the college premises needs to be rectified as soon as possible, for the betterment of students and that for the sake of institution’s reputation too.
